Huge Setback to ABVP, Congress Student Wing NSUI Wins 3 Posts including President in DUSU Polls

In a massive turnaround, Rocky Tuseed of National Students’ Union (NSUI), Congress student wing bagged the President post in Delhi University Students Union (DUSU). When the counting started on Wednesday morning, the student wing of RSS, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) was leading on all posts. However, NSUI took a surprise lead midway and is now it has clinched 3 out of 4 posts including Vice President and Joint Secretary’s post.

ABVP candidate won the Secretary post in the DUSU polls which was conducted yesterday.

The NSUI last swept DUSU polls in 2007 and has been on a slide since then, except in 2012 when it won three seats. The Congress backed student wing, which managed to win only the Joint Secretary post in the DUSU panel last year. The boost for NSUI comes in at a time when the student group was thrown off the contest in a humiliating defeat in Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union (JNUSU) election held on September 8.

DUSU has been a straight close contest between ABVP and NSUI, the Left-wing’s All India Students Association (AISA) is now a vocal participant.

According to Delhi University, of the 1,02,624 voters in the 40-odd DUSU affiliated morning colleges, 46,504 students turned up to cast their votes in the election on September 12.The voter turnout has increased by almost 10% since last year.

In this years’ DUSU election, ABVP fielded a political science student from Motilal Nehru College, Rajat Choudhary as its Presidential candidate while Paarth Rana, Mahamedhaa Nagar and Uma Shankar contested for the posts of Vice-President, Secretary and Joint Secretary respectively.

From NSUI, Rocky Tuseed who is an MA Buddhist Studies student, Kunal Sehrawat, Meenakshi Meena and Avinash Yadav contested for the top central panel posts.

Apart from ABVP and NSUI, AISA and SFI were also in the fray.

Reports have also emerged that a lot many students preferred NOTA instead of voting for a candidate
