Woman Falls To Death While Taking Selfie In Matheran

The victim, Sarita Rammahesh Chouhan from South Delhi died after falling into 900-ft valley while taking a selfie at Louisa Point at Matheran.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening, hours after the family of five reached the popular hill station in Raigad district after visiting a relative in Pune. Around 6.30 pm, all the family members went to Louisa Point. There, all of them started clicking selfies and photos.

The victim, Sarita Chauhan, was accompanied by her husband Ram (38), a painting contractor, and their three children, the police said. Her eldest daughter is in class VIII.

“Around 6.15pm, Sarita and Ram were taking selfies at Louisa Point amid the fog and strong winds, when she slipped and fell into 900-foot-deep into the valley. Their children were playing nearby,” said assistant police inspector Mahadeo Acharekar.

A shocked Ram approached the police. “A police team, along with members of the Sahyadri Trekkers group and local tribals, recovered her body after an eight-hour search,” said a police officer. The Matheran police have filed an accidental death report.

According to a Washington Post report, about half of the world’s selfie-related deaths in 2015 occurred in India. On Monday, two Tamil Nadu tourists drowned in Goa while clicking selfies, while a teenager in Mumbai  drowned near Marine Drive while trying to click himself.
