Two Hizbul militants killed, one arrested during encounter at J&K’s Kulgam district

In yet another major encounter with security forces, two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists have been gunned down at Khudwani in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Reportedly, following an intense gunfight which broke out early morning on Monday, armed forces have also arrested an over ground worker (OGW) belonging to the same terrorist outfit.

In instant action on a tip off, a team of armed Indian Army officials sealed off a village in Khudwani area of the valley at around 3 am and opened fire at holed up terrorists. Security forces have recovered an AK-47 and an INSAS rifle from the site of the encounter.

The two slain militants have been identified as Dawood Ahmed Ali and Shaiyar Ahmed Wani while the arrested OGW worker is named Arief Sofi. According to the officials, the militants were a part of the Altaf Kachru group in Anantnag and Kulgam belt. Among them, Dawood was earlier involved in the Arwani bank robbery and also in the murder of a village ‘sarpanch’.

Earlier on Sunday, two terrorists were killed and another caught alive during an encounter at Barbugh village in the Shopian district of Kashmir. According to the police, the teenaged terrorist who has been identified as Adil, 17, had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen group in May. His arrest marks as the first arrest of a militant during an encounter in south Kashmir in recent years. As reported by NDTV, Jammu and Kashmir Inspector General of Police, Munir Khan said, “Last time when I came here I told police that we should give chance to those who want to surrender.”

The recent encounters come at a time when Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh is on a four-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir in an attempt to “interact with delegations from different sections of the society.” On Saturday, militants opened fire at a police party in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir, claiming the life of a constable. The attack took place barely a kilometre from the venue of the Home Minister’s meeting with security personnel.
