No Aadhaar, no entry: Woman delivers baby outside hospital ward in Gurugram

pregnant woman was forced to deliver her baby outside Civil Hospital’s Emergency Ward, in Gurugram. Twenty-five year old Munni delivered a baby girl outside the emergency ward of the hospital on Friday, after she was denied entry for not carrying her Aadhaar card.

Speaking to PTI, Munni’s husband, Bablu, a daily wage labourer, said that after they reached the hospital, a doctor and a few nurses asked them for Munni’s Aadhaar card to get an ultrasound done. Bablu had Munni’s Aadhaar number but wasn’t carrying the hard copy. When the authorities didn’t relent and told him that it was mandatory, he had to go home to get it.

The Hindustan Times quoted Bablu as saying:

“Munni was standing in pain for two hours at the gate of the emergency ward and finally delivered the baby there at around 12.30pm. I was left helpless as my wife was screaming and shouting in pain.”

Reportedly, other people at the hospital raised an objection and Munni and her child were finally admitted in the gynaecology ward. Although the police reached the hospital, Munni and her family were unwilling to file a complaint. She said:

“We were asked to produce the Aadhaar and the process got delayed because of it, but we did not raise any objections. We want to go home now. We don’t want to blame anyone. They were doing their jobs.”

Chief Medical Officer, BK Rajora said:

“The woman reached the hospital with full labour pain and the gynaecologist sent her with a staff nurse for ultrasound as the woman didn’t have any test reports of her pregnancy. She was asked for her Aadhaar card for ultrasound and thus her delivery process got delayed. We have found the doctor and the staff nurse responsible. We have suspended them and conducting a probe into the matter.”
