Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, who is leading the India’s battle against Covid-19, is set to take charge as the Chairman of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Executive Board. He will be elected on May 22 in an Executive Board meeting, said the officials on Tuesday.
The Board Meeting is a procedural formality of passing the power to Dr. Harsh Vardhan who will replace Dr. Hiroki Nakatani of Japan, currently the Chairman of the 34-member WHO Executive Board.
His news of taking over the post for a three-year-term had been decided without exception last year by the WHO’s South-East Asia Group that India’s nominee will take over for the first year beginning from May.
The main functions of the Board mainly include the implementation of the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly and facilitate its work.
It is noted that it is not a full-time assignment for the Chairman and the minister will just be required to chair the Executive Board’s meetings, said an official.
