Daren Sammy, Windies winning captain alleges of being called ‘KALU’ during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderbad

Earlier on June 2, Daren Sammy took to twitter and alleged that he has faced racism during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderbad in the Indian Premiere League. Sammy had lost his calm as he learned the meaning of the word ‘KALU,’ a  jibe aimed at him.

Darren Sammy, the former Windies T20 World Cup winning captain has released a video on his instagram account, alleging he, along with Sri Lankan player Thisara Perera were called with the name ‘KALU’ and used to think it was something uplifting but Daren has lately realized that he was being subjected to racism during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013 and 2014.

Daren came up with these allegations after his outspoken support to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign after the killing of the African-American George Floyd in the US asking the entire cricket community to react on this protest and come ahead in support.

In the tweet, however, the player did not mention anyone who used to aim such slurs at him but now in the video he posted on instagram, Sammy clearly said he is going to message everyone who used to call him with that word ‘KALU’.

“I have played all over the world and I have been loved by many people, I have embraced all dressing rooms where I have played, so I was listening to Hasan Minhaj as to how some of the people in his culture describe black people,” Sammy said in a video posted on his Instagram account.

“This does not apply to all people, so after I found out a meaning of a certain word, I had said I was angry on finding out the meaning and it was degrading, instantly I remembered when I played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, I was being called exactly the same word which is degrading to us black people,” he added.

Sammy points out to ICC to take a serious note of racism happening to people like him in this gentlemen’s game.

” . @ICC and all the other boards are you guys not seeing what’s happening to ppl like me? Are you not gonna speak against the social injustice against my kind. This is not only about America. This happens everyday #BlackLivesMatter now is not the time to be silent. I wanna hear u” Daren wrote in a tweet.
