CA gets Diwali gift and faints, courier pinches Rs 9 lakh valuables

An unidentified man posed as a courier out to deliver a Diwali gift, and made away with cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 9 lakh from a chartered accountant’s flat in Sion recently. The accused, aged around 35, went to the victim, Chintan Shah’s flat on the ground floor of Gujarat Society in Sion (West) on the pretext of delivering the gift. Seconds after Shah collected the box, he fell unconscious and came to only 40 minutes later.
Interestingly, the burglar did not steal the man’s mobile phone, “because it is easy to track its location,” said a cop.
At the time of the incident, Shah (45) was home alone as his wife and daughter had stepped out for some work. “The accused seems to have conducted a recce of Shah’s building and struck when he was alone at home. The thief was aware that the building has no closed-circuit television or even security guards. We have collected the CCTV footage of a neighbouring building to identify the accused,” said a Sion police official.
Shah’s flat was burgled between 3.40pm and 4.20pm on October 10. No one from his building noticed any suspicious man enter or leave. In the complaint, Shah said, “Since I was unwell that day, I decided to rest for a while before heading to my office. I had taken medicines and was asleep while my wife and daughter were out when the doorbell rang.”
Shah collected the gift box and was checking the details which the accused asked him to verify. “Shah said he fell unconscious immediately after collecting the box. When he came to, he found his flat had been ransacked and cash and valuables were stolen. We’ve sent Shah’s clothes and other material to the forensic science laboratory to find out the chemical used to render him unconscious,” said a police officer. A case has been registered under Indian Penal Code sections 380 for theft and 419 for cheating by impersonation. Cops have advised citizens to exercise caution around delivery boys.
