A Couple from Agra, Uttar Pradesh allegedly sold their newborn baby to a hospital as they were unable to pay the bill.The 36-year old Babita underwent a C -section surgery to deliver a baby last week.The whole procedure cost nearly about Rs 35,000 including medicines.
However neither did she nor her husband Shiv Charan a 45 -year old rickshaw puller, had the money to pay the hospital bills. So in an attempt to settle the bill, the couple allegedly sold the baby for Rs 1 lakh.The hospital, however, denied the claim and said that the baby had been handed over them for adoption.
The couple who can’t read and write claimed that they gave thumb impressions on all documents on the instructions of the hospital. The couple said that they did not get any discharge papers either and the hospital paid them Rs 1 lakh and parted with them.
Reacting to the incident District Magistrate Prabhu N Singh called it a serious matter and will conduct the proper investigation against the person involved.
The couple also said that no one helped them in figuring out where they could get free treatment when Babita was pregnant and they are not covered under the Ayushmaan Bharat scheme also.
Shiv and Babita are parents to 5 children and they live at a rented house in Shambu Nagar, Agra. Shiv eldest son is a laborer at a shoe factory but was left unemployed after the factory closed down due to COVID -19.
