One of the most important letters in the tech industry and the most misunderstood letter as well. The creative mind of Steve Jobs did not restrict the letters meaning in just one word rather it is a combination of all important aspects of modern computing.
Decoding the letter “i”
The i in the series of iMac, iPhone, iPod, iPad mostly refers to “internet” and the implication is little more complicated. This unique naming convention started with the iMac back in 1980’s and it marked the beginning of a whole new computing experience, changing the way people approached computers.
Introducing the brand new iMac, Steve Jobs is his keynote speech said “number one use that the consumers say they want to use the computer for : the internet” gives ample evidence for us to conclude that i stands for internet and adding to that internet was beginning to catch up on the users and was spreading like a raging fire making as the central point for advertisements.
Also, Steve Jobs showed a slide with a variety of captions all indicating the meaning of i,
“internet, individual, instruct, inform, inspire”
To add a little more mystery to the meaning Steve Jobs also mentioned in the keynote that the i meant many other things also
“We are a personal computer company, and although this product is born to network, it also is a beautiful stand-alone product. We are targeting it also for education. They want to buy these. And it is perfect for most of the things they do in instruction.”
Only the mind of Steve Jobs could give the letter “i” a whole new meaning. All we can do is predict and speculate but it is not still clear what was the origin of using the letter for the apple’s series?
But what’s life without a little mystery?
