Ace Bangladesh All Rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been forced to make a public apology on Monday evening after receiving Islamist threats for participating in the Kali Puja event in Kolkata. Shakib received a death threat from a fundamentalist on Facebook live, accusing the Cricketer of blasphemy.

Soon after pictures went viral of Shakib standing with the Kali Puja organizers in Kolkata, Mohsin Talukder, a resident of Shahpur Talukder Para in Sylhet, started a Facebook live on Monday claiming Shakib’s behavior had hurt religious sentiments. He also threatened to cut Shakib to pieces with a chopper. He even added that he would walk from Sylhet to Dhaka to kill Shakib if necessary.

Later on Monday evening, Shakib went live on YouTube and issued an apology and explanation that he did not inaugurate the Kali Puja. He was only a part of the event on another stage and was no part of the Puja pandal. Shakib said one of the organizers Paresh Pal requested him to light a Diya and the pictures went viral on social media.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, B.M. Ashraf Ullah Taher, said, “We just became aware of the matter. The video link has been handed over to the cyber forensic team. Legal action will be taken soon.” Later, the youth again went live on Facebook and apologized for his action. He also advised all the celebrities, including Shakib, to follow the ‘right path’.

Shakib was handed a two-year ban, with a one-year suspended sentence, by ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit on October 29 last year, for failing to report multiple corrupt approaches by an Indian bookmaker. The ban period ended on October 29, 2020.
