Orlando Night Club Attack: What we know about the shooter !

50 people died, 53 injured in a mass-shooting at Florida. An American-born man who’d pledged allegiance to ISIS gunned down 50 people early Sunday at a gay nightclub in Orlando, the deadliest mass shooting in the United States and the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11, authorities said. Here’s what we know about the gunman Omar Seddique Mateen:

  1. 29, was a New York-born American citizen who lived in Port St. Lucie, Florida. His parents are from Afghanistan.
  2. He had pledged allegiance to ISIS in a 911 phone call he made before the attack and the assault appeared to be ISIS-inspired.
  3. He twice came to the attention of investigators in 2013 and 2014 over alleged links to Islamist extremists.
  4. FBI first came aware of Mateen in 2013 when he made inflammatory comments to co-workers alleging possible terrorist ties.
  5. Later, he was interviewed by FBI agents investigating his contacts with Moner Mohammad Abusalha, a fellow Floridian and the first US citizen to carry out a suicide bombing in Syria.
  6. He was prepared for the attack with an assault-type weapon, a handgun and some other device on him.
  7. His job as a guard at a juvenile delinquent facility may have given him access to the heavy assault weapon he carried.
  8. His father, Mir Seddique told NBC news that his son became angry when he saw two men kissing in Miami several months ago. “This has nothing to do with religion,” he said.
  9. His ex-wife spoke ofa. difficult marriage in which he was abusive and violent, and suggested he may have been mentally unstable.
  10. The nature of crime, police say, indicated that the shooter was motivated by a mixture of hate and religion.
