A national human milk bank has opened at Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi. The bank, which was inaugurated on Tuesday, will provide breast milk to newborns and promote breastfeeding.
Known as ‘Vatsalya – Maatri Amrit Kosh’, the bank – also a lactation counselling centre – will collect, pasteurise, test and store milk that lactating mothers donate.
The bank has been established in partnership with the Norwegian government, Oslo University, and Norway-India Partnership Initiative (NIPI).
Union Heath Secretary, CK Mishra told PTI, “We launched Mothers Absolute Affection (MAA) programme to create awareness about breastfeeding, which is the most cost-effective way of enhancing a child’s immunity.”
The bank will also offer assistance to other milk banks in teaching and training.
