Comedy of errors: Helicopter with wedding party lands in high security prison in Bangladesh

In a much weird incident in Bangladesh, a private helicopter which was supposed to fly a wedding party by mistake landed inside a high security jail. The incident sparked massive security concerns as the police had prior reports of terrorists planning an attack on the jail to free inmates. Officials have confirmed that the guards at the Kashimpur Central jail had detained all the five passengers for a brief period while the pilot flew away with his plane after sensing trouble. While the passengers were members of an expatriate Bangladeshi family, the pilot was reportedly a retired air force officer.

As reported by the Press Trust of India, Inspector General of prisons Brigadier General Syed Iftekhar Uddin was quoted saying, “This happened by mistake but the incident made us concerned as there are intelligence reports that terrorists could launch attacks to free militant inmates from this jail.”

The Inspector General further confirmed that the alert guards immediately cordoned off the helicopter as it landed and the passengers were shortly detained but the plane flew away. Stating that the helicopter service management had also apologised for the grave mistake, the police chief also stated that the passengers were allowed to join the wedding at a nearby village after a brief interrogation. Bangladesh media reported that a Malaysia based Bangladeshi chartered the helicopter to join a relative’s wedding.
