“This is not my India” A.R Rahman voice his thoughts on the killing of Gauri Lankesh

The gruesome murder of noted journalist Gauri Lankesh had sent a wave of resentment among the Indians and to the people proactively supporting the dissent in the country. The Journalist was gunned down when she was returning from her office and walking towards her home. The murder had brought people together, protests are being carried out and the demand for free and fair trial is put on.

Noted journalists, common people and renowned celebrities from the film industry have expressed their grief and shock over the murder. Joining the same ranks, A.R Rahman had expressed his views on the murder. While condemning the murder, AR Rahman asserts that if such incidents take place in the country then it was not his India. While speaking at the premiere of his upcoming film One Heart: The AR Rahman Concert Film in Mumbai, Rahman affirmed that he was extremely sad to hear the news of her passing and added that he wanted India to be “progressive” and “kind”.

“I am so so sad about that. I hope these things don’t happen in India. If these things happen in India, then it is not my India. I want my India to be progressive and kind,” Rahman was quoted as saying.

While talking about the movie, Rahman stated “it was probably the first concert movie in India. We wanted to give an alternate kind of movie to the audience because people have seen action, romance comedy and everything but a musical movie which have great quality and sound is something to look out for.”

Gauri Lankesh who was an outright Hindutva critic and was known for her outspoken views on communalism was shot dead outside her residence in Bengaluru. The incident took place on September 5 when Lankesh was opening her house door when unidentified motorcycle-borne men opened fire at her. Seven rounds of bullets were reportedly fired at her. While four missed the target, three hit her – two in the chest and one on her forehead killing her on the spot
