Farhan Akhtar is not someone you can just brush off. He is what the adage so aptly refers – the Jack of all trades. His father, Javed Akhtar, is one of the finest lyricists this country has seen.
He was also Salim Khan’s partner in crime once upon a time when it comes to writing screenplays for movies, and together they gave us some memorable scripts to immerse ourselves in, including the epic Sholay. His mom, Honey Irani, is also a well known screen playwright herself, known for her works in Lamhe and Kya Kehna. So naturally both Farhan Akhtar and his sister Zoya Akhtar have the right kind of genes when it comes to movies and talent. The actor-director is turning 43 years today, and on behalf of BollywoodLife, we wish this multi-faceted talent Many Many Happy Returns of the Day.
Bollywood should owe a lot to Mr Akhtar since he is basically the one who is responsible for our movies to look so cool, ever since Dil Chahta Hai, his directorial debut, releases in 2001. This timeless youthful drama is still watchable even though 16 years have gone by, and Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe is still a rage at every party. Now he is also one of the most sought after actors in the industry, which however, made him compromise on his directorial reins, that really sucks.
On his birthday, let’s look at 7 roles that Farhan has taken on in his career, that makes him the most talented celeb in Bollywood.
Like I said before, it’s really sad that Farhan Akhtar has chosen to not direct a full-length movie after Don 2, because he is a better director than an actor. Everyone loves Dil Chahta Hai – a movie that friends swear by – while the much underrated Lakshya was his most mature work till date. Both the Don movies with Shah Rukh Khan at his baddest best were fun thrillers, and they clicked at the box office. So why Farhan? Why not return back to the director’s chair for another round?
When he is not directing and acting, he, along with his own partner in crime Ritesh Sidhwani, produce different cinema under the banner of Excel Entertainment. Some of their best productions have been Rock On, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Fukrey. Currently, they are going through a rough phase with not so brilliant performances of Baar Baar Dekho, Dil Dhadakne Do and Rock On 2. However the upcoming Raees (which they co-produced with Red Chillies Entertainment) could change their luck.
Well, what do you expect from the offspring of the great Javedsaab? Farhan pens most of the screenplays of his productions, and he has also written the lyrics for a couple of songs in Gurinder Chadha’s Bride & Prejudice.
As he was good looking in an unconventional sort of way, people often wondered why he never chose to make his debut as an actor, and instead became a director. To silence those questioners, he made his acting debut in Rock On, which as you know, was a runaway success. He later on acted in several other movies like Kartik Calling Kartik, Luck By Chance, Wazir and the Rock On sequel, but his best performance was in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
Honestly speaking, I am not a huge fan of his dulcet tones, but I have to admire his confidence to attempt playback singing for his own songs – a culture we see in the West, something he had started doing since his debut movie, Rock On, where he sang nearly every song. He has also performed at various concerts.
One thing that endeared Farhan Akhtar to many of us is his consistently strong stand on the atrocities committed against women. His social initiative, MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination), has got lot of following.
Reality show judge
Farhan Akhtar was the judge of the dance-reality show, Nach Baliye in 2005. He has also hosted a TV show called Oye! It’s Friday! in the same year.
Agree with our feature that Farhan is a man with many faces, in the right way!
