Indians lose over 1.5 years of their lives to air pollution

Ambient air pollution shortens an average Indian’s life by over 1.5 years, say scientists who suggest that better air quality could lead to a significant extension of human lifespan around the world. Researchers said that if PM2.5 concentrations worldwide were limited to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) air quality guideline concentration of 10 microgrammes per square cubic metre, the global life expectancy would be on average 0.59 year longer.
The benefit of reaching the stringent target would be especially large in countries with the highest current levels of pollution, with approximately 0.8–1.4 years of additional survival in countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China. This is the first time data on air pollution and lifespan has been studied together in order to examine the global variations to find out how they affect the overall life expectancy.
The researchers from University of Texas at Austin in the US looked at outdoor air pollution from particulate matter (PM) smaller than 2.5 microns. These fine particles can enter deep into the lungs, and breathing PM2.5 is associated with increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, respiratory diseases and cancer.

PM2.5 pollution comes from power plants, cars and trucks, fires, agriculture and industrial emissions. They found that the life expectancy impact of ambient PM2.5 is especially large in polluted countries such as Bangladesh (1.87 years), Egypt (1.85 years), Pakistan (1.56 years), Saudi Arabia (1.48 years), Nigeria (1.28 years), and China (1.25 years). India had a life expectancy impact of 1.53 years, according to the study. The team used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study to measure PM2.5 air pollution exposure and its consequences in 185 countries.
They then quantified the national impact on life expectancy for each individual country as well as on a global scale. “The fact that fine particle air pollution is a major global killer is already well known,” said Joshua Apte, who led the study published in the journal Environmental Science echnology Letters.

“We were able to systematically identify how air pollution also substantially shortens lives around the world. What we found is that air pollution has a very large effect on survival — on average about a year globally,” said Apte. In the context of other significant phenomena negatively affecting human survival rates, Apte said this is a big number.
“For example, it’s considerably larger than the benefit in survival we might see if we found cures for both lung and breast cancer combined,” he said. “For much of Asia, if air pollution were removed as a risk for death, 60 year olds would have a 15 per cent to 20 per cent higher chance of living to age 85 or older,” he added.
“A body count saying 90,000 Americans or 1.1 million Indians die per year from air pollution is large but faceless,” said Apte. “Saying that, on average, a population lives a year less than they would have otherwise — that is something relatable,” he said.

Man shoots porn to deny impotency claims, sends it to in laws!

Hyderabad: Facing the rebuke of impotence by his wife during their divorce proceedings, a man made a pornographic video with another woman and sent it to his wife’s parents to disprove the accusation. The 32-year-old man based in Hyderabad was getting divorced by his estranged wife.

However, his inexplicable attempt to disprove the charge depreciating his manhood didn’t go down well with anybody. In fact, the man was divorced, arrested and later convicted by the court. The man is identified as Vibavasu, a resident of Lal Bahadur Nagar in Hyderabad city whereas the woman is identified as Anusha living in Muthamizh Nagar, Kodungaiyur.

After the man sent objectionable video to his in-laws, a case was registered by Anusha at MKB Nagar all-women police. The couple was married two years ago in an arranged marriage, police said. It was further revealed that the couple lived together for just 15 days after which they separated.

In the judicial complex, she stated that her husband was impotent and asked for a divorce on that basis. The husband, after knowing her reason for seeking a divorce, became infuriated and tried to hit back at her.

The man made a pornographic video starring him. To refute his wife’s claims in that video he allegedly had sex with another woman. Police suspect that a third person shot the video.

KRK Claims He Has Stage III Stomach Cancer

One of the most controversial celebrities on social media, Kamaal Rashid Khan aka KRK has once again hogged the limelight, only this time the reason is rather shocking and unfortunate. Rumours have hit the internet lately about the actor-producer suffering from stomach cancer.

An official Twitter handle by the name of KRKBOXOFFICE shared the press -release claiming that the celebrity suffers from the deadly ‘c’ word. Read it here:

KRK often courted trouble for his controversial statements, targetting other celebrities. The Bhojpuri film producer started his career with ‘Deshdrohi’ in 2008 and later went on to hog limelight for various reasons. His jibes and remarks on fellow actors often made him a headline maker.

The actor-producer also appeared in season 3 of the popular reality show ‘Bigg Boss’. He was seen in a cameo in superhit Bollywood film ‘Ek Villain’ which starred Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead roles.

His jibes on Twitter landed him in a soup and his account was suspended not once but twice.
He tweeting against the Khan trinity of Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir, alleging that the three of them forced Twitter to suspend his account. Then, he went on to claim that SRK told a filmmaker that he will finish all the critics. Now, after creating a lot of drama online with what was seen as his comeback, Twitter suspended his account again.

Earlier, he accused Aamir Khan of pushing Twitter to suspend his account. Reportedly he even issued a statement naming Aamir’s involvement in the suspension of his Twitter account.

Here’s hoping KRK recovers soon!

Now a Diabetes Drug That Can Help Alleviate Alzheimer’s Symptoms Too

A drug created to treat type 2 diabetes could be used to fight Alzheimer’s disease, say scientists who found that the medicine significantly reversed memory loss in mice.

The research, published in the journal Brain Research, could bring substantial improvements in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease through the use of a drug originally created to treat type 2 diabetes.

The treatment “holds clear promise of being developed into a new treatment for chronic neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease,” said Professor Christian Holscher from Lancaster University in the UK.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and the numbers are expected to rise to two million people in the UK by 2051 according to Alzheimer’s Society, who part- funded the research.

Although the benefits of these ‘triple agonist’ drugs have so far only been found in mice, other studies with existing diabetes drugs such as liraglutide have shown real promise for people with Alzheimer’s, so further development of this work is crucial.

This is the first time that a triple receptor drug has been used which acts in multiple ways to protect the brain from degeneration.

It combines GLP-1, GIP and Glucagon which are all growth factors. Problems with growth factor signalling have been shown to be impaired in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

The study used APP/PS1 mice, which are transgenic mice that express human mutated genes that cause Alzheimer’s.

Those genes have been found in people who have a form of Alzheimer’s that can be inherited. Aged transgenic mice in the advanced stages of neurodegeneration were treated.

In a maze test, learning and memory formation were much improved by the drug, which also enhanced levels of a brain growth factor that protects nerve cell functioning.

It also reduced the amount of amyloid plaques in the brain linked with Alzheimer’s, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress.

The drug also slowed down the rate of nerve cell loss.

“These very promising outcomes demonstrate the efficacy of these novel multiple receptor drugs that originally were developed to treat type 2 diabetes but have shown consistent neuro- protective effects in several studies,” said Holscher.

“Clinical studies with an older version of this drug type already showed very promising results in people with Alzheimer’s disease or with mood disorders,” he said.

“Here we show that a novel triple receptor drug shows promise as a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s but further dose-response tests and direct comparisons with other drugs have to be conducted in order to evaluate if this new drugs is superior to previous ones,” he added.

Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s and has been implicated in the progression of the disease.

Insulin desensitisation has also been observed in the Alzheimer’s disease brain.

The desensitisation could play a role in the development of neurodegenerative disorders as insulin is a growth factor with neuroprotective properties.

3 Tips For Helping A Loved One With Anxiety During the Holidays.

Everyone feels anxious now and then. It’s a normal emotion. For example, you may feel nervous when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision.

Anxiety disorders are different, though. They are a group of mental illnesses, and the distress they cause can keep you from carrying on with your life normally.

For people who have one, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming and can be disabling. But with treatment, many people can manage those feelings and get back to a fulfilling life.

Here are few tips to help your friends and family who deal with anxiety cope:

1-Offer them a quiet place to go when you notice them getting anxious.

A bedroom, the back patio or even the laundry room with a chair will suffice! Sometimes, a quiet spot helps you gather your thoughts and compose yourself.

2-Don’t automatically assume they’re being “rude” or “antisocial” if you see them put headphones.

A lot of people I know who struggle with anxiety consider music to be calming.

3- Don’t harass or tease them if they aren’t joining in on the 50 conversations going on.

Sometimes, it’s just a bit much to handle.

Keep these tips in mind to help avoid a potential anxiety attack.

Is Smriti Irani on Diet??

Keto diet is a health fad that refuses to die. The diet, which is a quick and reliable way to lose weight, has been a rage among many celebrities, including comedian Tanmay Bhat and American TV star Kim Kardashian. Union Minister Smriti Irani appears to be the latest to join the keto bandwagon. Or so it would seem.

The Instagram-savvy politician posted a picture on her account of a bowl of chicken, with the caption ‘Keto chicken’. While the emoticons accompanying the photo didn’t suggest she was too happy with the food, the photo she posted right after was of a box of donuts with the caption ‘sugary end to the day’.

For the uninitiated, you can’t have sugar if you’re on keto diet.

So, Irani is either on the keto diet, with the keto chicken being her current best friend and the donuts are a cheat dish. Or she’s not on the diet and the chicken was just a one-off meal. Guess only the Union minister knows for sure.

The keto diet is a high-fat and low-carb diet which relies on breaking down fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. High on fat, moderate protein and near-zero carbs, it is known to achieve wonders when it comes to weight loss.

Unlike other diets, keto encourages the intake of cheese, along with cream, butter and ghee. And it’s all about the protein-rich meats
